Announcements

President Fred announced these upcoming club events:

  • Coffee Friday is July 12
  • Happy Hour is July 18

Gold Raffle Meeting
Ken Ruiz said that this will be the 30th annual Gold Raffle. This year it will be held at the Mini Cooper dealership October 23rd.  Dave Jauer gave Fred a check for the first raffle ticket sold this year!  Ken asked those of us who wanted to stay afterwards for a brief meeting.

Happy Independence Day!
We will not meet next Wednesday, July 3.

National What Day

  • National Coconut Day – coconut oil falls into the superfood category due to what all it can do for our health. We use the whole coconut. If you are lactose intolerant, then use coconut milk when making homemade ice cream.
  • National Beauticians Day – also known as stylists, hairdressers and cosmetologists, these men and women make us look our best every day. They also become our close confidants, getting to know our families and everything about us. I know because I have been married to one for almost 43 years.
  • National Parchment Day – arrives to bring innovation and convenience back to the kitchen. Parchment infuses flavor, locks in moisture and preserves vital nutrients and has long been a part of the French kitchen.
  • National Chocolate Pudding Day – loved by children and adults as a snack or a dessert, it can also be used as filling for chocolate crème pie.

This Day in History

  • 1948 – the U.S. begins the Berlin Airlift – delivering food and supplies by airplane to Berlin after the city is isolated by the soviet union blockade.
  • 1956 – Congress approves the Federal Highway Act which allocates $30 Billion for the construction of 41,000 miles of interstate highways.
  • 1945 – the U. N. Charter is signed by 50 nations
  • 1977 – Elvis Presley sings in Indianapolis, the last performance of his career.
  • 1964 – the U.S. releases the Beatle’s “A Hard Day’s Night” Also, last Tuesday, Paul McCartney turned 77.

Pass the Hat: San Antonio Food Bank – for kids in the summer when there is not a free lunch at school.

Umbrella Time
James Daniel owns the umbrella this month. James reported that he and Eloise are still going through the adoption process.  They have now gone through the interview process.  The next step is to submit for their license.  They expect to get their little one in about 2-3 weeks. We are so excited and happy for you two! Thank you for sharing your adoption journey with us.

Fines and Confessions
Destiny Mujica confessed to missing her pin. In honor of her late husband she shared that it is the 13th anniversary since he passed away. She also shared that "it's the great cycle of life:  in December she is expecting a Rotarian baby!" We celebrate her happy news and wish her a healthy pregnancy.
Ken Ruiz was missing his pin.
Brenda Jackson's oldest son Charles is Army JAG and will be stationed in Georgia.

Club Lunch and Business Program
Today our program included the installation of club officers. We were honored to have our District Governor Kathy Hubbard as our Master of Ceremonies.

Without further adieu it was award time!

Our members Fred Timmons and Rick Rhodes were honored by District Governor Kathy Hubbard for their levels of giving to the Rotary Foundation. Rick received his pin with 5 Sapphires and Fred received his pin for the next level with one Ruby.

District Governor Kathy shared that the month of June is a very busy time in Rotary. There is a sense of excitement and many opportunities. She said that she was "honored to work with President Fred this year." Further she commended the club for "selling raffle tickets."  She introduced the new 2019-2020 Board: Rick Tarbell, president. This will be Rick's second time to serve the club as president. Rick is a stock broker with the NFA firm. "This is the most important role in Rotary", Kathy said. She then introduced James Daniel, president elect. James is a Realtor and teaches technology for the Keller Williams Realty brokerage. James also serves on the Communications Team for District 5840. John Legris, vice president. John is a local practicing attorney and is the past president of the Leon Valley Rotary Club. Gloria Richter, speaker chair, Stuart Dudley, treasurer for another term and Mary Denton, secretary also for another term. Mary is also a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. Fred Timmons will serve as immediate Past President. Fred is a CPA and the Principal at Clifton Larson Allen.

District Governor Kathy asked the board members if they would uphold the high standard goals of Rotary and lead the club into the future. She also asked the members of the club to stand and asked if they would commit to supporting the board in all endeavors. We all gave an enthusiastic "We will!!!"

Jerry Hardy, currently District Foundation Chair, and past District Governor was also our honored guest today. He shared with us that last year 39 Rotary clubs applied for district grants. He also mentioned that members are able to benefit Rotary through their estate and other ways.  For more information click HERE . We appreciate your service to Rotary and your support to our club Jerry! It's always a pleasure to see you.

President Rick announced that we are starting to organize committees for opportunities for club members to serve.  He passed around a list of committees for us to sign up. "We need committees to line up members. We don't want to be known as a checking writing club. Also maybe we can find new places this year for our club to support." Regarding the changing times, he said "At one time attendance used to be mandatory. Another requirement was to visit the club before and after induction. Now it's like chasing a puffy taco - there are no rules."  President Rick suggests that members plan to go to Interact Clubs. Clark High School's Interact Club volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and also volunteers for Blessings in a Backpack.

Fun fact:  Ken Ruiz was the one who invited (President) Rick to Rotary!
    Show Low Raffle
The suspense is building - the pot is now $625! John Legris introduced our wine offerings today:  Rocca delle Macie Chianti Classico, John gave his approval, "very good" and Esteio Vinho Verde "back by popular demand." Joe Montagna was the first ticket drawn and had the opportunity to draw that elusive 2 of clubs. Unfortunately he drew the 7 of hearts! He walked away a winner with the Vinho Verde. Stuart Dudley owned the second ticket drawn and took home the Chianti.

Thank you Ken Ruiz for donating the wine for June!
