Prayer, Pledge and Visitors
The meeting began with the ringing of the bell by President Fred Timmons. Joe Montagna led us in a word of prayer and with the pledge.

Umbrella Time: No one owns the umbrella this month.

Gold Raffle Drawing Update
We're doing great! President Fred reported that $11,500 has been collected so far.  Keep up the good work everyone!

On this Day in History Fred Timmons shared:
  • In Nov 26, 1863, a Thursday, was designated Thanksgiving Day, a national holiday.
  • In 1955 Children's TV show, Captain Kangaroo, began programming. Who remembers Bunny Rabbit, Mr. Green Jeans and Grandfather Clock? (Mary didn't even have to Google that info...)
  • 1960 The Andy Griffith Show, a TV show about life in a small town in Mayberry began programming. Remember how Barney, the Deputy carried his one bullet in his pocket? (once again Mary didn't have to Google that..)
  • 1995 NFL Player, OJ Simpson, was acquitted of murdering his wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.

National Days Fred continues Allyson's tradition of keeping us current with
  • National Boyfriend Day
  • National Walk to School Day
  • National Techie Day
  • National Coffee with a Cop Day
  • National Pumpkin Seed Day

Humor President Fred Timmons asked, "What is the vegetable that plumbers hate?  Leeks!"

Welcome Guests! We were pleased to have as our guests, Dr. Jackie Parsons, Assistant District Governor, and future Oak Hills Rotarian John Legris. Allyson Hamlin's family had a mini reunion which included her cousin, Aaron Collins who was our speaker, his mother Sharon Collins and Jim Sherrill, Allyson's father. The only one missing was Allyson who was away on a trip!

Bruce Richter shared an article from the September Rotarian, "Travel as a Force for Peace." by Rick Steves. The article is unclear whether Rick is a member of a Rotary club. If he is, as Bruce pointed out, "Just think of all the meeting makeups Rick would have!" As we know, in their travels around the world, Bruce & Gloria make it a practice to visit Rotary Clubs in each locale they visit. On October 8th they will be visiting Barcelona Spain where there is now a revolution! Bruce said that they will be looking at the cuisine to help them decide which side of the country they will choose to support by visiting a Rotary Club. We will be anxiously waiting to hear their interesting stories about this trip and they always bring pictures for show and tell! Bruce shared that while in France they attended a fundraiser where they rode classic cars and in Lithuania there was a glider camp for kids. They also have visited St. Andrews, Scotland's, Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. We all bid Bon Voyage to Bruce and Gloria and hope they have safe travels and a great time on their trip!

Club Lunch and Business Program
Our speaker today was Aaron Collins of Safe2Save whose topic was "Leaving a Legacy."  He said we all will leave a legacy and that it's up to us to decide what that legacy will be. He pointed out the dangers of distracted driving and that it is now an epidemic and it affects everyone. "Small decisions impact big consequences in life. Big decisions result in life factors that define our lives," he said. A friend of Aaron's experienced the tragic result of distracted driving. Dimitri was 16 years old when he was killed by a someone who was texting while driving. This needless death, and the heartache it caused, moved Aaron's friend to pledge to do something about it in order to make a change. Safe2Save was born in order to positively reward drivers for not texting while driving. Aaron is currently working with Safe2Save and is busy spreading the word. The app is free and can be easily downloaded from either the App Store on an IPhone or Google Play on an Android phone. Businesses that participate in Safe2Save reward drivers with discounts and other incentives as the driver builds up points. The driver uploads a photo of someone dear to them so that their picture always displays when driving with the caption, "Is it really worth it?" It is a reminder of the precious people in your life that would be affected if something tragically occurred. Perhaps this small act can help save a life - maybe yours and your family members. So take a few minutes to download the app and encourage your loved ones to use it too. After the meeting Mary McGuyer downloaded the app and says that it is easy to use.
We are   collecting   candy now for   Morgan's   Wonderland's   annual   Halloween Party!
