Program for November 14, 2018

Prayer, Pledge and Visitors
The meeting began with the ringing of the bell by Ken Donoughue of Medical Center Rotary. Rich led us in a word of prayer and with the pledge.

Umbrella Time: We are planning to auction the umbrella in 2019!

On this Day in History Fred Timmons shared:
  • In 1896 Niagara Falls Power Plant begins operation
  • In 1948 Prince Charles was born
  • 1960 Ray Charles "Georgia on My Mind" reaches #1
  • 1964 Apollo I launched

National Days Fred continues Allyson's tradition of keeping us current with
  • National Education Support Professionals Day i.e. lunch room personnel, school bus drivers
  • National Pickle Day
  • National Spicy Guacamole Day

Humor President Fred Timmons shared "Great Truths about Life that Adults Have Learned"

  • Raising teenagers is like nailing JELLO to a tree
  • There is always a lot to be thankful for if you take the time to look for it.  For example, I am sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt.
  • One reason to smile is that every seven minutes of every day, someone in an aerobics class pulls a hamstring.
  • The best way to keep kids at home is to make the home a pleasant atmosphere and let the air out of their tires.
  • Car sickness is the feeling you get when the monthly car payment is due.
  • Families are like fudge...mostly sweet with a few nuts.

Rotary Minute Bruce shared with us an article from the November magazine:  In July 1919...The Rotarian printed its Gold Star Roll of Honor, listing club members "who gave their lives in the service of their countries and humanity." It contains the names of 47 Rotarians: 26 were from the USA, 9 from Canada, 8 from Scotland and 4 from England." Interestingly, there were no Rotary clubs in continental Europe or Australia until after the war.

Club Lunch and Business Program
Our speaker today was Elizabeth Garza, Librarian at Locke Hill Elementary School.  Ms. Garza holds a BS in Psychology with a Marketing minor and a Masters in Education and Librarian Certification for K-12.  Locke Hill Elementary is celebrating its 150th year anniversary. The school began in 1868 on Fredericksburg Road and was called Shavano School. The school's motto was written by a former student: "We just can't hide our Lion Pride!"  Their Mission Statement: "Passion for Creating Relationships, Rigor and Results for ALL!" Locke Hill is a smaller campus with only 670 students. Elizabeth shared with us that the campus demographics have changed a lot. It is changing to a Title 1 campus - low income is indicative of the area. A lot of apartments are closeby. Title 1 means the school will qualify for funding to try to help the children. They will receive money to provide books for their library. They welcome and are able to receive private donations. There will be a high need of Spanish language books.  They have computer aided work stations at the school - a computer lab and computers in the library. There are volunteer opportunities to read to the children.  Volunteers can make specific requests. There is a real need for tutors to help the students.  Teachers serve the whole classroom so individual volunteers are welcome. Volunteer opportunity is scheduled and is during school hours. She shared that the Learning Tree after school care is in need of readers. Volunteers can read to the students or help them with homework. Ken Donoghue regularly donates his time reading to the children and he reports that some of the students read extremely well. He stated that students between K - 3rd grade learn to read and after that they read to learn.  During summer break the children lose the ability to read.
