National What Day
  • National Purple Heart Day – originated by George Washington in 1782 and refined by Gen Douglas MacArthur
  • National Lighthouse Day – honors the beacon of light that for hundreds of years symbolized safety and security for ships and boats at sea. The oldest existing lighthouse in the U.S. is the Sandy Hook Lighthouse in New Jersey, built in 1764 and is still in operation.
  • National Raspberries N’ Cream Day – there are more than 200 species of raspberries. Russia produces the most in the world, 120,000 tons per year. Besides red, raspberries come in purple, gold and black colors too.
Gloria Richter also shared that it is
   National Medal of Honor Day
   Purple Heart Day

To all of those who served in the armed services and fought to defend our country, we thank you.

This Day in History
  • 1955 – Tokyo Telecommunications soon to become Sony begins selling its first transistor radios in Japan
  • 1959 – The first satellite to photograph the Earth is launched
  • 1990 – Operation Desert Shield begins in response to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait

Lunch and Business Program
Our speakers today are Glenda Spears and Giovanni of the Neptune Society.  Glenda is a graduate of the University of North Florida with a BA in Business Management.  Early in her career, she opened the International Call Center in Montego Bay, Jamaica.  She started a non profit organization to educate Jamaican Youth, teaching them how to write resumes and interview for the job wanted. Locally she volunteers for several non profits including the Food Bank. Currently she is a Certified Pre-Arrangement Adviser with the Neptune Society. Glenda is a prospective member of the Oak Hills Rotary Club.

Two years ago Glenda's husband passed away suddenly.  She is thankful that he had pre-arranged with the Neptune Society. After being notified of her husband's passing, someone from The Neptune Society was at her door to counsel her.  Glenda recommends that we "put your wishes for cremation in your will.  Death is inevitable.  Plan ahead." Also, "Spare your family from arguments." Pre-arrangement with The Neptune Society can include taking care of your final needs anywhere in the world. Pre-arrangement protects your finances and assets. Glenda shared some statistics with us: 20 years ago 25% of people chose cremation and today it is 50%. In Europe there is no land available to bury loved ones. The Neptune Society is a part of Roy Akers. For more information about The Neptune Society please click HERE.  Glenda Spears is a Pre-Arrangement Advisor. To reach her directly, please call 210-722-1925 (cell) and email is glendaspears@sci-us.com

As is our tradition we will donate a book in honor of our speakers to the Locke Hill Elementary School library.

Thank you Ken Donoughue for donating books for this month!
    Umbrella Time
Ken Ruiz used his umbrella time to explain to our visitors about the umbrella auction. The donation from whoever wins the umbrella for the month goes towards their Paul Harris Fellowship.  They have a few minutes during the meeting to talk about whatever they wish.  They are also fine free as long as they own the umbrella.

Ken asked, "Where is everyone going to be October 23rd?" Also, "How can you make our club the friendliest club in the world?"

Vice President John Legris introduced this week's wines:  J. Lohr Paso Robles Merlot and Silk Oak Sauvignon Blanc Appellation of Lodi. This one reminded John of Creedence Clearwater Revival's hit "Lodi".....
    Snap your fingers HERE...you're welcome!
John reports that the Merlot is wonderful paired with steak and that he sampled the Sauvignon Blanc at HEB and says "It's delicious!"
Allyson Hamlin won the opportunity to win the $750 pot this week.  Luck wasn't with her because she drew the 6 of hearts. She happily took home the Sauvignon Blanc as a consolation prize.  Fred Timmons owned the second ticket drawn and took home the Merlot.

Mary Denton donated the wine for the month of August.

    Fines and Confessions
July was a busy month for several of our members!
Bruce & Gloria Richter enjoyed the opera and chamber music in Santa Fe. They reported that the weather was nice. Interesting story: Bruce was missing his thumb drive and thought he left it at the hotel so he called them. He was delightfully surprised that they found it and returned it to him!
Derek Matthys congratulated Madison Martinez for being accepted to Sam Houston State University.
Brenda Jackson and husband Charles drove to Georgia to visit with their son.
Destiny Mujica and family travelled to Las Vegas, her son's choice of vacation destination this year! This was a surprise to her - also surprising was how much there was for them to do!
Veronica Ruse celebrated her birthday with a trip to the Great Lake O'the Cherokees - she and her husband made good use of the new boat he recently bought!
Mary Denton celebrated her birthday this month. She and her husband Pat enjoyed the cool weather on their trip to Colorado. They enjoyed hiking in the Rockies and catching up with old friends.

    Gold Raffle Ticket Update
Don't forget - the Gold Raffle is coming soon!  Be sure to sell all your tickets and see if Ken Ruiz has more for you to sell!
    Notice of New Member Proposal
At its August 8 meeting, the OHRC Board approved the application of Glenda Spears for membership.  Glenda would have the classification of Pre-Arrangement Advisor with The Neptune Society. If any OHRC member knows why Glenda should not be admitted into OHRC membership, please advise President Rick Tarbell within two weeks of this notice.
    Thank You!
The Kendall Robotics Team presented at our July 31 meeting with Kathleen Gately, sponsor and team members Hudson and Caden.  We recently received the following Thank You!

"Thank you sincerely for allowing our organization to do a robotics presentation for the Oak Hills Rotary club. Each of the Rotary members showed genuine interest in our robotics program during our time at the meeting. We are truly thankful for our sponsors. We also enjoy having the opportunity to present our efforts and successes as a team.

We thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful lunch provided by the Rotary club - thank you so much! Our robotics students are great volunteers who are used to giving back to their community, so please let me know if we can assist/serve the Rotary club in any way in the future.

    Best Regards,
    Kathleen Gately"
    Getting Started with Square
The OHRC Board approved the proposal for the use of a MagStrip reader that will allow members to use a debit or credit card for making payments. We are hoping that this will make it easier for those who don't normally carry cash.

Until we familiarize ourselves with this new device and the process, for a while at least please continue to bring cash or checks.
