James Daniel owns the umbrella this month. He and his wife Eloise are in the process of adopting. He said that it is a complex process and they are learning a lot.  He successfully put together the crib and was so proud he posted it on facebook! We're all very happy for you both and look forward to hearing more!  James' winning bid for the umbrella goes towards his Paul Harris Fellowship.  He will have the opportunity to speak during the meetings that he owns the umbrella and will be fine free!

Humor from President Fred
National What Day

  • National Gingerbread Day – is a sweet food that typically uses honey or molasses rather than just sugar and is flavored with ginger. It was first brought to Europe in 992.
  • National Moonshine Day – first came to the U.S. in the 1830s. Some of the nicknames for it are white lightening, mountain dew, homebrew, hillbilly pop and rotgut.
  • National Veggie Burger Day
  • National Running Day – whatever the distance, it’s about placing one foot in front of the other and setting a pace.

  • Tomorrow is the Anniversary of D-Day or the Normandy Invasion. It was the largest Seaborne Invasion in History. The operation began the liberation of German occupied France and later Europe from Nazi control. Allied casualties were at least 10,000 with 4400 confirmed dead.

This Day in History

  • 1968 – Bobby Kennedy was assassinated
  • 1934 – Walt Disney received a patent for Mickey Mouse
Pass the Hat: San Antonio Food Bank – for kids in the summer when there is not a free lunch at school.

Fines and Confessions
Allyson Hamlin was sorry she missed the meeting last week - she traveled to Raleigh North Carolina for business. Next week she will be traveling to Arkansas.
Destiny Mujica confessed that she wasn't here last week because she woke up to a flat tire.
Ken Donoughue confessed that somehow he lost his badge.
Barry Abrams was all aglow when he said that he and his wife Jerri traveled to California. They welcomed the newest member of their family - granddaughter Sydney!

VetStrong Update:
Bruce Richter shared that the Board approved a $500 contribution to the VetStrong program. Ramon Gonzales extended his gratitude for our donation. This organization is mostly volunteer run. They are looking for useable household goods for vets who are in need. Please send photos of the items to be donated to Bruce Richter. VetStrong is in need of temporary warehousing of a large amount of donated items from USAA. Club members are offering suggestions for warehousing and hopefully help will come soon!

Club Lunch and Business Program
Destiny Mujica introduced our guest speaker today, Andrea Lopez of the Rape Crisis Center. Andrea has been with the center since January 2018 and has a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Communication from UTSA. She is currently the Community Engagement Coordinator at the Rape Crisis Center. She shared that the center helps with a wide range of services from immediate crisis to prevention. They serve the needs of children, women and men. Andrea shared with us that many times victims do not report this crime so do not get the treatment that they need. It is very important to report incidents because it is a health and safety human right. The center is working to dispel the myths that surround sexual assault. It can happen any time, any where - wherever people congregate. Seven out of 10 times the victims know their assailant who uses opportunity to select their victim. It's about power and control. Andrea said that stalking, sexual harassment and voyeurism are all parts of sexual assault. The center's services are 100% free and they are grant funded. Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bills 1729 and 4102 that allows citizens to contribute the fund through the DMV when renewing for example driver's licenses, motor vehicle registration. Currently there is a backlog in testing and the funding is used to speed up the process of testing rape kits to help bring criminals to justice sooner and hopefully prevent repeat offenders.

Andrea invited us to visit the center. If you are interested in helping, there is a screening process for volunteers.

The Rape Crisis Center 24 hour hotline is 210-349-7273. For more information go to their website: www.rapecrisis.com. Their office is centrally located at 4606 Centerview Dr. Suite 200.

Thank you Andrea for speaking to our club about this very important subject! We applaud you spreading education and dispelling myths surrounding this violent act. Please come back to visit out club any time!
    Show Low Raffle
For our wine selections today, our favorite Sommelier John Legris presented Pool Side Pinot Grigio, the white wine selection and Frontera After Midnight, the red. John shared that the Frontera means "border" and "After Midnight" refers to the fact that the grapes are picked in the evening so that the flavor is locked in. Pool Side Pinot Grigio, for those paying attention, is making its second appearance. Derek Matthys won the opportunity to draw the 2 of clubs and win the prize of $550. As luck would have it he drew the 4 of spades. He donated his white wine choice to the speaker. Allyson Hamlin owned the second ticket drawn and took home the mysterious red wine.

Thank you Ken Ruiz for donating the wine for June!   By the way, Ken and his fiance are enjoying time away in Europe - have fun you two!
