Club Lunch and Business Program
Our speaker today was Bart Sherwood, Co-Founder of the ‘Train a Dog – Save a Warrior’ (TADSAW) program in San Antonio, Texas, and was the Owner-Manager- Pharmacist of Oak Park Village Pharmacy & Sherwood’s Cafe serving the Alamo Heights area of San Antonio, TX from 1985 thru 2004. While enrolled in college, Bart served in the U.S. Army Reserves, and today considers himself a “Weekend Veteran” limited to one weekend a month and 2-weeks during the summer. In 2010, the ‘Train a Dog – Save a Warrior’ (TADSAW) program was initiated as a part of the Penny’s From Heaven Foundation (Therapy Dog organization doing Animal Assisted Activity & Therapy); and in 2012, TADSAW, INC. filed as a separate  501(c)(3) not for profit organization, from the parent PFHF. Today, Bart continues to serves as President of the Board of Directors, Executive Director and Program Director, and any other role that needs to be filled.

Bart shared with us that "not all service dogs are the same." Dogs are trained for specialized fields. In this case dogs are trained to help vets diagnosed with PTSD, described an "occupation induced job related problem". They are trained to smell cortisol and adrenaline transmitters triggered when the Vet is experiencing a PTSD episode. The Vets learn how to train their service dog which ensures the Vet's future with another dog if the time comes when their dog dies or has to be retired. Many times he Vet can lead a productive life with less or no drugs with their possible side effects with their trained service dog. According to the Department of Veteran Affairs, 22 Vets diagnosed with PTSD commit suicide a day. Since many times the dogs the service dogs were once in a shelter, the lives of both the dog and Vet are saved. TADSAW provides service dogs at no cost and no application fee to the Vet because "it's an honor and a privilege to serve you. You defended our country."  The service dog improves the Vet's quality of life and allows them to live independently. The trained service dog gives the Vet hope and a future. If the Vet already owns a dog, many times their dog can be trained for service.

Bart shared more information that explains TADSAW and the service they provide the Vets.

We appreciate you, Bart, with the work that you are doing through TADSAW to honor our Vets. Thank you for taking the time to prepare this presentation for us and educating us about TADSAW.

Rotarians of the Week

This week we're recognizing three members of our Club for their years of service:

President Fred Timmons joined Rotary Jan 17, 1982

Bruce Richter joined Rotary Jan 1, 1977

John Legris joined Rotary Jan 1, 1985

We are privileged to have these distinguished businessmen who each serve in their community. As active members of our club they all demonstrate "Service Above Self". Thank you for your many years of service and for helping the rest of us achieve a higher standard that is Rotary Service!

Show Low Raffle
President Fred won the opportunity to draw the 2 of Clubs to win the $775 pot. (As a measure of added security Mary Denton shuffled the cards herself and will attest that the drawing was fair and square and there were no shenanigans.)  Unfortunately he drew the 2 of diamonds. Since there are no losers in the Oak Hills Club, Fred was given a bottle of white wine as a consolation prize.
Joe Montagna owned the ticket drawn for a bottle of wine and took home the red wine.

Gloria Richter is providing the wine this month - Thank You Gloria!
Pass the Hat
Pass the Hat for the month of January goes to the Boy Scouts
We are continuing Med Center's tradition of collecting for Polio Plus
Humor from President Fred
National What Day

National Apricot Day - the apricot tree can grow up to 45 feet.  A one cup serving contains 60% of daily allowance of vitamin A.
National Law Enforcement appreciation day was founded in 2015 to thank officers across the country for their daily sacrifice that they make to their communities.

National Static Electricity Day - my comment is "Why? or Who cares?"

This Day in History

1788 Connecticut became the 5th state to join the United States
1902 New York introduced a bill to outlaw flirting in public
1929 The Seeing Eye Company was founded to train dogs to guide the blind.
1937 The first issue of "Look" magazine went on sale.
2002 U.S. Justice Dept announced the investigation of ENRON, which became the beginning of the fall of the National CPA firm Arthur Anderson.
2007 Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, announced the first generation of the iphone.
Brags and Confessions
Joe Montagna confessed that he was missing his pin.

Umbrella Time
The umbrella was auctioned at last!  President Fred generously started the bidding on behalf of Rick Tarbell who was absent today.  Gloria Richter jumped in with her bid of $45. Ken Ruiz, who is not a member of the club, shocked us all by winning the umbrella with his bid of $50!  Ken will own the umbrella for the rest of January and February and will be fine free.  As a side note, Ken Ruiz was a member of Oak Hills Rotary before he moved to Florida. He served as past president of the Weston Rotary Club. He took the umbrella idea to his club which he joined in 1988. Ken said that he was the one who invited President Fred and Rick Tarbell, who were his clients to a meeting at Oak Hills. Roger Thompson's company did his printing and Joe Montagna his security system for his business. It's been rumored that Ken is returning to Oak Hills Rotary.
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers Needed!  Allyson Hamlin is working on some exciting volunteer opportunities:
Kendall County Robotics Club  Last year members of the club along with Kathleen Gately gave a presentation during our meeting.  The students even brought their robots to demonstrate their awesome skills! The club is in need of judges this year. Several of us are planning to volunteer and judge the skills of these amazing students. More info soon!
We are shooting for the High School Robotics on January 26. Time is from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Our Lady of the Lake University.
