Gold Raffle Drawing Update
We're doing great! So far we've sold 113 tickets! The drawing is fast approaching so let's see if we can finish selling the rest of our tickets!   Keep up the good work everyone!

On this Day in History President Fred Timmons shared:
  • 1845 U.S. Naval Academy (formerly U.S. Naval School) opens in Annapolis
  • 1877 Lt. Col. Custer is buried at West Point in NY.
  • 1935 Porgy & Bess opens on Broadway
  • 2004 Chris Reeves, who played Superman, died. Wikipedia details much of his story and it's quite fascinating....
We all welcomed Allyson back from her "business" trip to Florida....

National Days Fred continues Allyson's tradition of keeping us current with
  • National Curves Day
  • National Emergency Nurse Day
  • National Stop Bullying Day
  • National World Mental Health Day
  • National Bring a Teddy Bear to Work Day

Humor President Fred shared a young boy's thoughts on "How to be a Texan"

I’ll be as hearty of mind as I am of body.

I’ll be a straight shooter and a square dealer.

I’ll honor my mama, my daddy,

and my God.

My family name will be sacred and

my word will be as good as any contract.

I’ll remember the Alamo,

Buy American,

stick by my friends and

eat more chicken fried steak.

Bruce Richter shared with us facts and successes of Rotary's work to fight polio in "Review of Polio Plus"
  • Rotary and its partners worked to reach 430 million children in 39 countries during the 2017 Polio Immunization Campaign.
  • The oral polio vaccine is made from strains of the polio virus that are alive, but weakened.
  • High immunization rates are the best protection against both wild and vaccine-derived polio viruses.
  • Oral polio vaccine is the only vaccine that can interrupt the person-to-person transmission of wild poliovirus - that's why Rotary uses this approach.
  • Because viruses from different regions have slightly different genetic sequences, the virologists can map where the virus came from.
  • 17.4 million people who are currently healthy would have been paralyzed without our eradication efforts started in 1988.
  • The Rotary Foundation awarded nearly $700 million in Polio Plus Grants from 2010-2016.

Sarah Eads, DPT is the owner of Method Wellness and Physical Therapy in San Antonio where she provides cash-based PT service and therapeutic yoga classes. Sarah is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and has been a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist since 2004. She began teaching yoga under the therapeutic guidance of Nydia Darby, PT, DPT in 2008 and received her certification through The Hard and Soft Institute under Beryl Bender Birch in 2010. She received her doctorate from the University of Texas Health Science Center of San Antonio, a Master's degree from Sam Houston State in Kinesiology and attended Nicholls State University as a scholarship softball athlete. Sarah has a passion for creating a tailored experience for all levels of practitioner while encouraging community and giving back. Her PT Clinic offers patients quality time with Sarah in one hour therapy sessions. She feels that her patients will receive a higher quality of care since they will be under her higher level of expertise and professional care. Sarah shared that we are now in an opioid epidemic due to many people suffering from chronic pain.  She is qualified to diagnose how a patient's pain began and what to do to alleviate and reduce the pain. She explained the benefits of her cash basis practice versus going through a traditional health insurance resulting in a lower total cost for the patient. She shared her monthly "Give Back" classes benefit non profit organizations that her students choose. She shared that so far $2,000 have been donated to charity work since January.  Some of the charities supported so far have been Fisher House, Abode Hospice and Foundation for Fighting Blindness. The "Give Back" classes are at no charge, and monies collected go to the charity. Sarah offered our club members two classes at no charge at her Method Yoga and Wellness studio located at 12011 Huebner Road Suite 118. She was recommended to speak to us by Mary McGuyer who, after a knee injury and a history of balance issues, has benefited greatly from Sarah's yoga classes. Mary says she regularly practices the poses she learned from Sarah's yoga classes which have dramatically improved her mobility and balance.

Brags and Confessions
Mary McGuyer was bubbling over to share with us her many blessings that include Pat's good news from his oncologist - his cancer tumors are showing signs of shrinking. She also shared that she and Pat visited family in the Austin area over the weekend - his brother & sister in law and also her daughter and family to celebrate her daughter's birthday.  She also was happy that she achieved one of her goals this year of "capping" where she has sold over $2 million in real estate sales. "Mr. Gadget?"
