On this Day in History Fred Timmons shared:

  • 1835 Texas Rangers were created
  • 1931 Al Capone was convicted of income tax evasion - which segued to Fred's sage advice: "File your taxes!"
  • 1989 San Francisco Earthquake, magnitude 6.9, killed 67 people and caused 5 billion dollars in damages.

National Days Fred continues Allyson's wonderful tradition:

  • National Pasta Day
  • National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day
  • National Hagfish Day
  • National Support your Local Chamber of Commerce Day
Humor You may not know that President Fred Timmons is a big fan of all things to do with Texas such as:
  • Texas is larger than every European country except Russia.
  • Texas claims the world's largest rose garden (Tyler)
  • World's largest parking lot (DFW Airport)
  • Rattlesnake roundup (Sweetwater)
  • Fire hydrant (Beaumont)
Welcome Guests! Our guests this week were Jerret Krouse of the San Antonio Rotary Club and Ron Greenberg of the Alamo Heights Rotary Club. Ron is the Committee Chair for RYLA.
We were glad to see our regular visitor, Dave Jower of the NW Rotary Club.

Bruce shared a great article about Polio Plus, "Lessons from Life" in the November issue of the Rotarian Magazine. A school outside Jalalabad, Afghanistan, has played an important part in the lives of thousands of children. The school was founded by the Rotary Club of La Jolla Golden Triangle, California. More than 6,200 children, both boys and girls, are educated separately. Girls as well as boys participate in sports and they are taught the importance of sanitation for health and the prevention of illness, and the importance of polio awareness. Students share their knowledge of polio awareness and prevention with classmates, friends and family.  Read more interesting stories about Rotarians changing lives around the world by clicking the button below!
Club Lunch and Business Program
Brett Ward introduced our guest speaker Michelle Camara of Southern Wildlife Rehab.  Michelle is licensed to rehabilitate wildlife in Texas and Louisiana. She also maintains a Texas Educational Display and USDA permit to use live native animals for education. She specializes in bats, skunks and opossums. Although she has been rehabilitating wildlife for over 30 years, she opened the doors to Southern Wildlife Rehab, Inc. in 2014 and is now rehabilitating and providing education on a larger scale as a 501c3 organization. She has a Bachelors in Arts in Psychology. She somehow finds time to run her husband's law practice and holds several important positions in the practice.  She loves to educate people about wildlife and hopes to take away some common myths and misconceptions. She specializes in bats and skunks. Max and Olivia are a pair of skunks that she owns who have not been descented. She says that skunks don't spray unless they feel their life is in danger. To discourage skunks from setting up their love nest near your house, soak rags in ammonia and place them where you suspect they are hanging out. She discourages the use of mothballs because they make them sick. Michelle's passion is to encourage people to "like something they have never liked before". Michelle charges a nominal $50 fee per class to help offset the cost of the wildlife care and rehabilitation. If you are interested in sponsoring a class, contact Michelle email: southernwildliferehab@gmail.com or her cell: 210-825-8961.
Main Skunkline: 210-272-9621.
