Rick Rhodes is known to be late when he attends our club meetings.  He says it's because years ago the meeting time was from 12:15 pm to 1:15 pm. So in his mind at least he's "on time." We're always glad to see you Rick whenever you are able to attend!

About Crows
A fact you won't soon forget

Researchers for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority found over 200 dead crows near greater Boston recently, and there was concern that they may have died from avian flu.
A bird pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone's relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT avian flu.
The cause of death appeared to be vehicular impacts.
However, during the detailed analysis it was noted that varying colors of paints appeared on the bird's beaks and claws.
By analyzing these paint residues, it was determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks, while only 2% were killed by an impact with a car.
MTA then hired an ornithological behaviorist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of truck kills versus car kills.
He quickly concluded the cause.
When crows eat roadkill, they always have a look-out crow in a nearby tree to warn of impending danger.
They discovered that, while all the look-out crows could shout "cah", not a single one could shout "truck".

Lunch and Business Program
John Legris introduced our speaker, Ana Sandoval, Councilwoman for District 7. She was speaking out against domestic violence. Many times the cycle of violence is perpetuated through children who are abused. "Hurt people hurt people", Ana said. Many times the victim relies on their abuser. Dating education is needed for young women to teach them what's acceptable behavior. In recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the City of San Antonio is announcing the first of several new initiatives to address domestic violence including launching the “Love Is...” campaign PSA.  To watch it, click HERE. The campaign was developed through a collaboration of the San Antonio Police Department, Department of Human Services, Government and Public Affairs and Metropolitan Health District and supports ongoing programming and policy efforts being developed to respond and reduce domestic violence in San Antonio.

Thank you Ana for visiting our club today and for making us aware of these issues. We hope that you are able to come back and join us again sometime!

As is our custom, we will donate a book in honor of our speaker to Locke Hill Elementary School Library.  Destiny Mujica has donated books for November. Thank you Destiny!

    Show Low Record Pot!
Today the pot is $1,050 - a record!  Destiny Mujica owned the first ticket drawn for a chance to win. She picked a card from the deck of only 8 cards. Unfortunately she drew the king of diamonds - as we always say, "there are no losers at Oak Hills Rotary" so she took home the red wine.  Bil Trodlier owned the second ticket drawn and took home the white.

Vice President John Legris introduced this week's wine selections. The Casillero del Diablo Concha y Toro is from Chile. John didn't know what the relationship between "bull" and "shell" are for a wine so it's a mystery.  The white is from Germany, Wilhelm Bermann, a Riesling.

With only 7 cards left, the pot grows to a record high of $1,050 next week!

Thank you Rick Tarbell for donating the wine for the month of November!
