Holiday Calendar

We will NOT be meeting the day before Thanksgiving, Nov. 21

Please note our December meetings will be offsite.

Dec 5 We will meet at our regular time of 11:45 at the Art Institute Culinary School. We have made a reservation and will enjoy a delicious gourmet lunch prepared by student chefs. Please contact Mary Denton if you plan to attend so she let Chef Rice know. The Art Institute is located on the IH 10W access road near Wurzbach Road next door to Alamo Cafe. This promises to be memorable - some of these students go on to some of the most prestigious restaurants!

Dec 8 Earn-a-Bike Volunteer Event at Our Lady of the Lake University  We've been learning about this worthy non-profit from one of our new members, Destiny Mujica - here's our chance to help!

Later that same evening....
Dec 8 Our Holiday Party will be at the Sonterra Country Club again this year. This is always a fun event so please plan to come! We will exchange white elephant gifts.  I'm always confused about the number of times an exchange can be made.  I suspect that the rules are made up as we go...

Dec 19 We will meet at our regular time of 11:45 at the Ecumenical Center. We had a good turnout last year and learned a ton of information about the programs at the Ecumenical Center.
Address: 8310 Ewing Halsell at the corner of Wurzbach Rd.

Program for November 7, 2018

Prayer, Pledge and Visitors
The meeting began with the ringing of the bell by Ken Donoughue of Medical Center Rotary. Ken also led us in a word of prayer and with the pledge.

Umbrella Time: We plan to auction the umbrella again after the busy holidays.

Club Lunch and Business Program
Our speaker was unable to make it today. Undaunted, our members rose to the occasion and shared these items of interest:

Satelline Rotary Clubs
Med Center President Ken Donoughue shared that there are three satellite Rotary Clubs. Please contact Ken for more information.

Volunteer Opportunity
Med Center President Ken Donoughue shared with us this volunteer opportunity: Reading to the children at The Learning Tree, which is an after school program through Northside Independent School District. A link can be found below for more information!
More Gold Raffle News
President Fred was very encouraged by everyone's willingness to pull together this year to sell all 300 raffle tickets. This was a major feat and we all stepped up to the plate! Fred reported that he sold 119 tickets, followed by Rick Rhodes who sold 65 tickets and Ken Ruiz who sold 25 tickets.  The rest of the tickets were sold by various members of the club.

Rotary Clubs Abroad
Our International Rotary Delegates, Bruce & Gloria Richter, shared about their recent trip to Spain. They were disappointed this time that they saw almost no Rotary signs. Bruce pointed out that Barcelona is on the southern coast of Spain. In Lisbon one of the sites they visited was the small replica of the Belem Tower to aid visually impaired people in getting a view of the tower. They were sure glad that they did their homework before the trip so they would know which wines to order!  Bruce shared a tidbit of culture: in Barcelona a crosswalk is called a "zebra" because of the painted lines.

Names for Grandpeople
President Fred brought up an interesting topic: Grandparent Names!  He asked us to share the names our grandchildren have given us as well as names given to our grandparents.  President Fred and his wife Sharon are called "Grunkle" and "Granty" by their nieces & nephews. Other names were shared: "Pops", "Meemaw", "Dollar Bill", "Sweet Pea", "PeePaw", "Grandma", "Granddad", "Mimi", "Nana", "Granny", "Grams" "Little Granny", "Papa Mac", and my personal favorite, "Babe".  My apologies for the spelling, every family chooses different spellings.

Pass the Hat
Proceeds from Pass the Hat for August will be donated to Elf Louise.

Show Low Raffle
Gloria Richter won the opportunity to draw for the 2 of Clubs and win the $650 pot for today. Unfortunately, she drew the 4 of Spades but did not go home unrewarded.  She took home a bottle of red wine as a consolation prize. The pot will increase by $25 next week.

Wine Drawing
It's never a surprise when Joe Montagna owns the ticket drawn for a bottle of wine. He took home a bottle of white wine.

James Daniel donated the wine for November.

Wine.O.U's were delivered to these very grateful past winners: President Fred and Joe Montagna.

Brags and Confessions
Med Center President Ken Donoughue was happy that his grandson Kevin placed in the top 10 band competition finals and will be competing in the UIL.

Missing Pins and Badges
Rick Tarbell confessed to missing his pin.

The Meeting was closed with the Four-Way Test, led by Ken Donoughue
